Job Description:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Operate multi-band radios, operate Criminal Justice Information System National Crime Information Center computer, Provide assistance to field law enforcement units, Coordinate joint operations with local, state, and federal law enforcement and public safety agencies. Provide information to the general public and other public and private entities

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities of Environmental Police Law Enforcement Dispatcher I

  • Operates sophisticated multi-band radio to address emergency and non-emergency requests

  • Coordinates department access and use of worldwide police telecommunications network.

  • Assures compliance with Federal Communications Commission rules to disseminate information over radio network broadcasts orders to coordinated dispatching of law enforcement and other emergency services

  • Coordinates dispatch and response of federal agencies to federal enforcement activities

  • Coordinates department response to natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, blizzards etc.

  • Coordinates search and rescue operations on the lands of the Commonwealth. Coordinates emergency medical

  • Response to remote areas of the state during severe weather

  • Receive Law Enforcement related communications from the public provide assistance as needed

  • Provide information via communications system to coordinate activities of local, state and federal law enforcement

  • Personnel engaged in major emergency activities such as pursuits, warrants, surveillance and immobilization

  • Provide information via communications system to coordinate the activities of local state and federal officers during Natural disasters, medical emergencies, fires and domestic abuse

  • Utilize numerous local, municipal, county state, federal and international enforcement agencies and emergency services to address or investigate complaints or requests for service

  • Responds to requests from worldwide enforcement agencies relative to wanted or missing persons, criminal histories, Stolen property, sensitive intelligence, terrorist activity, drug interdiction, or smuggling

  • Respond to telephone requests for information from the public, other public service agencies and the media to

  • Provide general departmental information

  • Maintain records of radio transmissions, complaints received via telephone, fax, or marine radio

  • Ability to operated department CAD Computer Aided Dispatch system to enter and retrieve data to assist field units

  • Ability to build good relationships and strategic partnerships

  • Ability to adapt quickly to shifting priorities

  • Ability to follow chain of command

  • Ability to propose and implement specific solutions to problems that enhance the department’s organizational structure

  • Ability to balance competing priorities and demands on the department

  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple and complex assignments or tasks

  • Performs other related law enforcement dispatcher duties as required or assigned

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE

  • Ability to use, speak, write, read, comprehend, and spell the English language clearly

  • Ability to remain calm in a stressful environment or during a stressful incident

  • Working knowledge of basic computer systems

  • Ability to speak clearly and distinctly

  • Ability to give oral instruction in clear concise calm manner

  • Ability to work accurately with names, numbers, codes, and symbols

  • Ability to maintain accurate and legible records

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in oral instructions

  • Ability to understand and follow written or oral instructions

  • Ability to establish harmonious working relationships with others

  • Ability to deal tactfully with others in sometimes stressful situations

  • Ability to adjust to changing situations to meet emergency needs or changing program requirements

  • Ability to exercise discretion in handling of confidential information

  • Ability to work long hours under sometimes stressful conditions

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks accurately and calmly under stressful or emergency situations.

  • Ability to work various shifts

  • Ability to respond to short notice requests in various weather conditions

QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON THE JOB

  • CJIS Criminal Justice information system computer certification

  • APCO Association of Public Safety Communicators basic telecommunicator’s certification

  • Operation of departmental computer network

  • Ability to be appointed as a Deputy Environmental Police Officer

  • Ability to gather, organize, and understand information through questioning of individuals

PREFERRED LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATION:

  • Valid driver’s license

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicant must have at least (A) one year of full time or equivalent part-time, experience in the operation of communications systems, or (B) the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

A diploma as evidence of graduation from a recognized high school or vocational/technical high school or a Massachusetts high school equivalency certificate.

Special requirements: After appointment employee must obtain basic APCO certification, CPR and first responder certification. Ability to be appointed as Deputy Environmental Police Officer. A valid motor vehicle operators license.
