Position Summary


Incumbents of positions in this series prepare landscape designs for parks, bridges, roadways, and other public land; conduct field investigations and analyze site conditions; prepare construction and design documents; inspect construction work in progress to ensure compliance with landscape specifications; and perform related work as required.
The basic purpose of this work is to perform professional landscape architecture duties to promote the visual appearance and environmental sensitivity of public land.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepares landscape designs for parks, bridges, roadways, and other land to promote environmental sensitivity
    and visual appearance.

  • Conducts field investigations and compiles and analyzes data concerning site conditions such as topography,
    soils, hydraulics, vegetation, wetlands, environmental hazards, legal and land use regulations and restrictions,
    environmental traffic and maintenance conditions in order to prepare landscape designs.

  • Prepares design documents such as sketches, photographs, digital and video presentations, and construction
    documents such as master plans, specifications and cost estimates for landscape architectural projects.

  • Inspects construction work in progress in order to ensure compliance with landscape specifications, and
    recommend alternative methods of construction or substitution of materials to resolve problems as they occur.

  • Coordinates the preparation of reports, studies, designs and other projects; provides technical coordination
    among state, federal and/or local agencies; and represents the agency at meetings, hearings, and conferences on
    technical matters.

  • Performs related duties such as drafting plans, maintaining records, developing and maintaining databases, and
    preparing charts, maps and reports.

This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired at MassDOT. Current MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts: 1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee's first paycheck. 2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee’s probationary period.

Minimum Entrance Requirements

Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in the development, implementation and/or evaluation of landscape design and/or landscape architecture work of which (B) at least two years must have been in a professional capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions

I. A Bachelor's degree in landscape design or landscape architecture may be substituted for two years of the required (A) experience. -

II. A Graduate degree in landscape design or landscape architecture may be substituted for a maximum of three years of the required (A) experience and one year of the required (B) experience. -

NOTE: Educational substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of one year of the required(B) experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
