Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell is looking for one or more highly motivated attorneys with litigation experience to serve as Assistant Attorney General/State Trial Counsel in the new Office of the State Trial Counsel (OSTC). OSTC represents the Attorney General’s commitment to the highest quality of civil trial advocacy throughout the Attorney General’s Office. This Office serves as a central resource for litigation strategy, case development, trial preparation and presentation. The Office’s work also involves working on litigation matters to challenge federal actions that harm the Commonwealth and its residents.
Primary Duties:
- Represent the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in a variety of complex civil litigation matters.
- Work on complex civil litigation teams challenging federal actions that harm the Commonwealth and its residents.
- Maintain an active caseload, including working actively on litigation strategy, drafting pleadings, preparing and arguing dispositive motions, and trial.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief State Trial Counsel.
- For State Trial Counsel:
o Support, lead and consult with Assistant Attorneys General on specific complex civil litigation matters.
o Work closely with and assist the Chief State Trial Counsel to carry out OSTC’s mission, including supervision of complex civil litigation matters and provision of civil litigation advocacy training and skills development for the Office.
Position Type: Full-Time/Exempt. Our current hybrid model includes some remote workdays for most positions.
Salary: $87,500 - $130,595, commensurate with JD year and experience.

Position Requirements:
- Must be a member of the Massachusetts bar.
- Knowledge of state and federal civil procedure, and familiarity with federal district court and Massachusetts Superior Court practice is desirable.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Self-motivated with the ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced public sector law office and meet deadlines.
- For Assistant Attorney General:
o At least three (3) years of relevant civil litigation experience, which may include judicial clerkships.
- For State Trial Counsel:
o A minimum of eight (8) years of relevant complex civil litigation and trial experience (which may include judicial clerkships).
o Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
o The ability to mentor, support and lead Assistant Attorneys General on litigation matters.
