Position Summary

MassDOT, as an Executive Office of the Commonwealth, is working to advance digital accessibility and equity. This initiative will provide internal and external constituencies with accessible, equitable, inclusive and usable digital services and information to the greatest extent possible.

The intern will assist MassDOT digital accessibility staff to implement the mission, vision, goals and strategies for this initiative. Responsibilities include assisting in the tracking of metrics to measure progress and helping to ensure that all digital content meets the Commonwealth accessibility standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage content for the organization’s web presence (requires working with content management software).
  • Copyedit and proofread web content to ensure the use of Plain Language.
  • Remediate documents for accessibility compliance.
  • Assist with updating dashboards used to track and report digital accessibility and equity metrics for MassDOT.
  • Assist in the testing of digital assets for accessibility compliance.
  • Advise internal teams on implementing accessibility into their processes and addressing accessibility issues identified in manual and automated accessibility testing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exceptional communication (written and oral) and organizational skills.
  • Experience with content management systems and SharePoint.
  • Knowledge and understanding of state and national accessibility laws and standards for digital resources including the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), Title II of the ADA, and Plain Language.
  • Practical experience building and managing data dashboards, familiarity dashboard software programs.
  • Ability to use various testing software including WAVE toolbar, ARC Toolkit, Accessibility Insights for Web, WebAIM Contrast Checker, and others. Experience testing with assistive technologies like JAWS, Dragon Naturally Speaking and ZoomText.
